Common Man

Hi! It’s a site/blog for myself as much as for anyone else. Who am I? Well, that question is best answered over a lifetime…isn’t it?

But over a period of time, I have come to hear the most common and apt description of myself and people like me is the common man/middle class. According to various searches over the internet, we range between 28%-4%. Pretty remarkable.

Further searching over the omnipresent and all-knowing web we may be up to the top 7% taxpayer in our country. Pretty impressive..eh? So pretty inflated at myself and under the assumption that I was one Elite citizen I told my better half we needed to replace our 6-year-old car. Since I was Elite the vehicle needed to be so too. So I selected a particularly good-looking car from a great company and proudly told my wife. “Are you crazy?” was her reply while withholding some expletives under her breath. Are you forgetting your home loan or do you not wish to pay for your kids’ fees? Whoosh! there goes the dream of unlimited horsepower and plush interiors. The kids have to study in the best available elite private school…innit? No compromises there. The lines from the poem Flight of Fancy(https://poetscollective.org/publicdomain/flight-of-fancy/ )by Canadian born poet Frank Halliwell sprung to mind:-

It’s dawning with the vista of the wide brown land before us,

Endless miles of golden beaches as our carpet brakes to slow,

I hope you all enjoyed your trip and none of you were nervous,

It’s morning, and there’s movement at the station below.

Another tidbit I came across is that we the collective Middle Class comprise 79% of taxpayers. That is a matter of pride (though none of the policies of various governments are targeted toward us..pun intended). We have our own set of trials and tribulations, joys and sorrows. We are busy haggling, cajoling, coaxing trying to get better deals to maintain our Status. We are worried about our social security at ripe old age, but along with that, we give our kids the best. We listen to the news but don’t get affected by it. We have wide-ranging opinions but convictions are few. We have the ideas but execute them seldom.

This life needs to be cataloged…ideas shared…..potpourri spread.

This is one heck of an interesting mundanemiddleclass life to go unrecorded.

That Thing, That Father Said

India has made tremendous progress in the past three decades or so, of that there is no doubt in my mind. But there is a story that our previous generation has to tell. Every elder in the household has a favorite story of their own. Be it of going kilometers to attend to the school…

Chhai Chhapp Chhai

Pretty recently I had an opportunity to spend a few days in Goa with my family. It’s no doubt a wonderful place. I am definitely in love with the place and the people. There’s something for everybody. Honeymooners, people seeking solitude, escape artists, college students, Gamblers. With people like us who are from the diametrically…

As I was remembering him I typed his name into Google, and I was pleasantly surprised to get lots of results pertaining to his literary works and newspaper articles in his memory. To us, he was our Dear Bauji. I…

On Doctors..Let’em Be

These days due to ongoing pandemic the role of a doctor/ healthcare provider is very much highlighted. We all have varying opinions regarding them. As I was sitting and having a cup of tea with…

The School Opening

The government in my state recently announced the opening up of schools from class 6th onwards. I didn’t know what to feel. There was relief in my mind on one hand and yet on another, there was consternation because the COVID cases are still coming and because of the predicted Third Wave. With the kids…
